Emma Watson

Which scene of all the Harry Potter films will stay with you forever?

Emma Watson

It’s a scene that I am not a part of; it’s one where Harry and Dumbledore meet in a version of heaven, and Dumbledore says something about the power of words, how they can inflict pain and still have wonderful power. I thought it was such a beautiful last thing for him to say, given the meaning and the scope of the books and of the franchise, and how much the books and
literature mean to me. Also, I thought it was so beautiful that Harry had a choice over his own destiny. When I read J.K. Rowling’s book, I was impressed by how brilliantly the ending was wrapped up.

You always look stunning on the red carpet; what has the experience been like for you?

Emma Watson

I’ve been doing it ever since I was a 12-year-old, so it’s something that comes with practice, you make mistakes and you learn from them. I remember being asked the question, “Who are you wearing?” and I thought of it as strange. However, since that moment, I’ve kind of understood and now I have fun. It’s really an art and you have to take an interest in it.

Noel De Souza

Do you have a favourite designer?

Emma Watson

At the moment, I’m big on Valentino.

Noel De Souza

But you have your own fashion line in collaboration with others?

Emma Watson

Yes, I do. I have collaborated with Alberta Ferretti. Of course, the times when I have collaborated have been for ethical fashion, so the clothes that we made were organic and based on fair trade [practices], which was really exciting. It’s been a fun thing for me to do on the side.

Noel De Souza

You have evolved along with the series. Now you ate the face of Lancôme and also a Burberry model. So what is your personal style statement?

Emma Watson

It’s really hard to articulate what your own style is because it’s something that’s so personal. However, I’d say that my style is quite classic and clean, but with a modern edge to it. I’m very inspired by the past. I love Jane Birkin, Grace Kelly, Jean Seberg and Audrey Hepburn; so I look back, but try to make it contemporary.

Jewellery is a big part of fashion, so what is one likely to find if one were to look into your jewellery box? And which is the most precious piece that you have?

Emma Watson

The most precious piece of jewellery that I have is a diamond ring. My birth stone is diamond, so my mother bought it on the day I was born in Paris from a vintage French jewellery shop. She wore it for 18 years and gave it to me on my birthday and I’m wearing it now. It is, by far, the most precious thing I’ve worn. I love that jewellery can have history. It is also a means of communication with my mother, a symbol that I love her.

Noel De Souza

What jewellery have you bought for yourself?

Emma Watson

I bought myself a really tiny Tiffany [ring]. Again, it has diamonds, my birth stone, and it’s delicate. I like things that are delicate because I’m petite and if I wear things that are too big, it’s kind of overwhelming.

What has been your most indulgent buy till date and what are the must-have items in your closet?

Emma Watson

The most expensive item of clothing I have is probably an Isabel Marant coat; and something that I couldn’t do without is a fitted pair of basic black cropped trousers, with a pair of ballet pumps—they’re fail-safe and the basis for everything.

Noel De Souza

Which is the most unique item hanging in your closet and that you are most proud of?

Emma Watson

The dress that I wore to the premiere of the third Harry Potter film [Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban] in London might have been a little too old for me, but my mom and I found it in a vintage shop. It was from the 1920s and we had it repaired. The reason that I wore a flower corsage is because it was ripped and had to be covered. We also found a ribbon to tie around the waist and I had my shoes dyed in the exact colour of the silk. The corsage was made from vintage flowers, which we found in a different shop. It was the first time that I ‘created’ something. Although, it wasn’t perfect by any means, the dress is special because it has history, and for me, that is what makes a dress exciting.

Is your apartment inspired by your sense of style?

Emma Watson

It’s an all-white apartment and the reason for that is because I love colour and if everything is white and you put bright colours against it, it looks amazing. I’m collecting photographs and art objects. A few years ago, I went to Mexico and picked up loads of very colourful stuff. So the apartment is white, but gradually getting colourful, mainly bright orange and pink.

Looking back at yourself in the first Harry Potter installments, as a young girl, what impressions and emotions run through your mind?

Emma Watson

The strange thing is when I see that girl, who I know is me, I almost feel like she’s another person. So much time has passed and so much has happened. It’s also embarrassing to see myself go through the awkward stages of growing up. My hair was enormous. I look at it and say, ‘wow’, it’s interesting to see the character change and evolve, and obviously, I’ve changed as well.

Noel De Souza

Now that you've graduated from Harry Potter, what kind of films are you interested in doing?

Emma Watson

I feel that I’ve got the blockbuster box truly ticked. I think I can leave that to the side for a while. I want to work with great directors, who have a vision, as I can keep learning from them, and hopefully, they have the generosity to teach me. I want to make smaller films, maybe a romantic comedy. I’m open to anything interesting and challenging. I just completed a film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It’s about a group of teenage girls in their last year in high school. My character, Sam, is a wordsmith, so I did a lot of ad lib for the first time in my career. It was fun being spontaneous, something I never got to do on Harry Potter as that had to remain true to the books.
