From being set up on beaches and mountains to even deserts, luxury tents seem to be the ‘in’ ways for globetrotters to vacation. Offering the best when it comes to service, the glamorous camps make for the perfect getaways for those looking for an experience that is anything but run-of-the-mill.
Here’s our roundup of the best tents for an off-beat vacation this holiday season.
Oberoi Vanyavillas, Ranthambore
Located few kilometers away from the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, this safari tent resort is nestled amidst manicured gardens, featuring torch-lit pathway and man-made lily ponds in Sawai Madhopur. The resort spreads across 20 acres and has a jungle inhabited by royal Bengal tigers, deer, and wild boars right opposite. The concrete wall tents feature wooden floors and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass windows. The interiors are done up with animal print upholstery, a four-poster wooden bed, and bed covers and quilts in suede and velvet. The resort also has a restaurant serving authentic Rajasthani specialties and continental dishes. Guests can dine under the stars or sign up for the resort’s customised itinerary that includes boat safari on Chambal River, jungle excursions, and high tea picnics in the jungle.

Banjaar Tola, Kanha
Housing two camps with nine suites each, the Banjaar Tola is the third safari by Taj Hotels in Madhya Pradesh. Located opposite Kanha National Park, the tents in the camp feature concrete walls with hot pressed bamboo panels. The floors are designed with woven bamboo strands. The tent also has a private patio that offers uninterrupted views of the forest and the Banjaar River. The interiors are furnished with locally sourced timber furniture that is finished with leather detailing. The linen used for the beds and the curtains stick to a nature-inspired palette of olive green, cinnamon brown, grey and beige. Each tent boats of a private dining area and offers guests a chance to indulge in local cuisines prepared by cooks from the villages nearby. Apart from forest trails and bird watching, the itinerary also includes activities like spending time with tigers and an outdoor jungle spa.

The Ultimate Travelling Camp, Ladakh
The Ultimate Travelling Camp that recently won an award for being Asia’s Leading Luxury Camp at the 2016 World Travel Awards has its luxurious camp close to the Thiksey monastery in Ladakh. The tents feature a bedroom and an ensuite bathroom with a private verandah. The windows offer an uninterrupted view of the Himalayan mountain range, the coniferous forest, and the river Indus. The cabana-style interiors are complemented by wooden furniture with handcrafted colourful upholstery, and woolen carpets. The camp serves local cuisines made using produces from the nearby villages. The experiences offered include village excursions and visiting monasteries like the Aichi monastery and Shanti Stupa in Leh. Apart from this, the local trails itinerary also involves horseback riding, polo matches, and river rafting.

The Fern Creek, Kodaikanal
The boutique resort is located in Kodaikanal, in the Palani hills. Spread across 1.5 acres, the getaway features seven exclusive tents with in-suit dining facilities. Perfect for honeymoon, the tents are designed to match the standards of a five star room. Apart from bonfire evenings, the itinerary also includes hill excursions, picnics in forest, and boat rides on Kodai Lake.

Chhatra Sagar, Pali, Rajasthan
The Rajputana camp, Chhatra Sagar, shares its name with the heritage water reservoir on which it is located in Pali district, Rajathan. It features 20 Rajputana-style, hand stitched tents that have canvas walls and wooden floors. Each accommodation also has a private deck furnished with handcrafted furniture and an exclusive bonfire place. Apart from offering a view of the villages and the water reservoir, the accommodations host in-suite dining prepared from local farm produces. The itineraries at this camp include camel rides, traditional performances by the campfire, and village excursions.
