From the ebullient Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker has moved on as the star of HBO’s new show, Divorce, tackling an entirely different relationship drama that has propelled her further to fame as an actress and a fashion icon. Here we catch up with the star to get a glimpse into her vibrant life, being in the shoe biz, and much more.
DESCRIBE A PERFECT LIFE.
I think everybody identifies differently with what they want, what they define as perfection or contentment, so my version might not be your version. But I would be a fool to suggest that my life is anything short of wonderful. That does not mean there aren’t concerns and worries, but on the whole, and relative to the world, I feel incredibly privileged and lucky.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SHOE BRAND SJP AND HOW YOU DEVOTE TIME TO IT?
I devote everything that is required. You just find the time; it’s a teeny company with just the four of us and we do everything ourselves, from looking at every single sample that comes in from Italy to attending every sales appointment and working on the sales floor, as well as with retail partners. It’s incumbent on me to be 100 per cent involved in anything that I do. These are the choices that I have made and it’s a privilege to have these opportunities; I almost feel honor bound to our customers.
WHAT DRIVES SARAH JESSICA PARKER?
Opportunity drives me! I never thought that I’d have the opportunities that I now have, and I really love it. I love the challenges and being a part of the creative world. I love meeting new people and learning new disciplines. I love sitting in a boardroom with a bunch of men whose work has been completely different their entire life and hearing about it. I love watching designers build dresses, learning about fabrics and the technical side of production.
YOU WEAR DIVERSE HATS IN YOUR LIFE, WHEN DO YOU FEEL MOST LIKE YOURSELF?
I understand that I’m an actor and am associated with that, but I feel my best when I’m with my children and doing all my motherly duties. This is what I am most comfortable with and I relate with my mother more now.
YOU WORE ALL THOSE INTERESTING CLOTHES IN SEX AND THECITY; DID YOU GET TO KEEP ANY OF THEM?
Oh yes, I’ve archived all of them and kept them in a storage facility, because I have no room in my closet.
Tell us about your fitness regimen.
I don’t spend much time on grooming or exercise. I live in the city where you’re out every day bringing home groceries or walking up four flights of stairs. According to me, there is no right or wrong way to look at fitness, it’s all about being healthy. Your body betrays you after a certain point, but your brain doesn’t, so you have to hang on and reconcile all the other stuff that flies out the window.
WHAT IS THE ONE REGRET THAT YOU HAVE?
You are not going to believe this, but when Matthew (Broderick) and I got married, it was a civil ceremony and I wore a black dress on my wedding day because I did not want to go shopping for a dress. I just walked into the nearest store and picked a black dress off the rack.
