Les Peupliers, painted by Claude Monet in 1891 sold for a $22.5 million (approx Rs 100.28 crore) at Christies in New York. It was part of the auction house's impressionist and modern art spring sale.  And a painting by Maurice de Vlaminck, from the same lot broke records as it fetched a $22.5 million (approx Rs 100.28 crore) too.

Les Peupliers was expected to sell for between $20 million to $30 million (approx Rs89.13 crore- Rs 133.70 crore) And it was a surprise when De Vlaminck's 1905 Paysage de Banlieue sold for more than double of what the artist's last work fetched, $10.8 million (approx Rs 48.13 crore). A lot of the paintings from the collection did not have takers.

Pablo Picasso's Les femmes d'Alger painted in 1955 was sold for $21.3 million (approx Rs 93.59 crore). Other highlights at the art sale were Femmes Lisant by Picasso and a sculpture by Gaugin.
